COAST

The coastal region is a deserted plain located between the Pacific Ocean and the highlands. However, it has fertile valleys with crops of cotton, sugar-cane, rice, grapes, etc. It also presents a high petrol production, as well as chemical and fish industry. The most powerful enterprises and industries in the country are located here, and are also the most populated. On the coast were developed the well-known pre-inca cultures such as Mochica, Chimu, Nazca, Paracas and Chavin whose archaeological testimonials are vast in the region.

It is the region between the coast and the jungle. It is totally covered by the Peruvian Andes which go through North to South of the country, divided in three Mountain RangesWestern, central and Eastern, and whose highest peak reaches 6768 metres above the sea level (the majesty snowcapped mountain Huascaran in Ancash). In the middle of this impressive geography lie the richest valleys in the country, excellent mining deposits, a dynamic agriculture and cattle activity, as well as colourful towns full of tradition and folklore.

It covers most of the half of the Peruvian Territory (60%) and is the least populated. It is between the highlands and the borders of Colombia and Brasil, and it is divided in High Jungle and Low Jungle. The first, is also know as "evebrow jungle" which consists of high lands typically of the Andes but covered in a deep vegetation and a fantastic variety of flora and fauna. Vast centres of agroindustrial production are located there. The low jungle or "Amazonia" lies between 80 metres and 400 metres above the sea level and is the jungle plain, the Amazon basin, the mightiest river in the world. Rich oilfields and impressive wooden and fishing industries determine the development of the place. Iquitos and Pucallpa are commercial centres.
