GEOGRAPHY

Peru is a large mountainous country located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean in South America. It has borders with Ecuador and Colombia in the North; with Brasil and Bolivia in the East, and with Chile in the South. The limit in the west is the Pacific Ocean. There are three natural regions:

  • Coast:
  • The coastal region, where Lima is located, is a narrow coastal plain mainly deserted and crossed by fertile valleys. Agricultural plantations, such as cotton, sugar-cane and rice, are located here as well as the majority of oil explotations in the country.
  • The Highlands:
  • The highlands, part of the Andean Mountain Range, has some peaks above 6000 metres of altitude. The mineral resources of the country, such as silver, zinc, iron, copper and gold are located in this area as well as the main part of the cattle. The jungle, is a zone of high fertile lands, of subtropical type.
  • The Montaña and the Amazon basin
  • The Amazon jungle is located on the eastern side of Peru. It has a great number of natural resources. However, the lack of communication and transport infrastructure made this region not to be exploited during the 70's. In 1973 the oil extraction started on a large scale. The population of Peru is a mixture of indians, mestizos and descendents of the Spanish colonists, in addition there are Chinese and African communities.
